Concept:
Present Over Past Series
Generative Memory is a continuation in my Present Over Past series, initially inspired by the concepts of memory spoken to in the The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. This inspiration continued to grow as I read through The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab— another incredibly thoughtful novel tackling memory, the wild nature of ideas and what it means to leave a mark on this life. It was through this book that I learned there is a word for what I’ve been trying to express through this body of work: palimpsest.

The undulating roots of fiber growing out and separating throughout this work to reveal the colorful depths beneath (or the palimpsest) reminds me of what it’s like to dig through the roots of our memories to see the past through the present. As I created this piece, I had my mind on how ideas are born from the interpretation of our memories and how our memories can generate new ideas that can change the world for the better.
