Concept:
Present Over Past Series
Sometimes I Forget is a continuation in my Present Over Past series, initially inspired by the concepts of memory spoken to in the The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. This inspiration continued to grow as I read through The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab— another incredibly thoughtful novel tackling memory, the wild nature of ideas and what it means to leave a mark on this life. It was through this book that I learned there is a word for what I’ve been trying to express in this body of work: palimpsest.

The undulating roots of fiber growing out and separating throughout this work to reveal the colorful depths beneath (or the palimpsest) reminds me of what it’s like to dig through the roots of our memories to see the past through the present. This particular piece is covered in roots and texture, nodding to the moments when our memories are taken over by the present and we start to lose them.
