As I created this piece, I found myself constantly feeling the need to make a disclaimer for the color palette used. “I don’t usually go for pink, but…,” was my waking thought. It struck me that this was yet another example of how the categories and labels that we have put on each other affects even the most simple things like a color. We have put a gender, personality type, and ability into the color pink. In my present mind, pink is girly, shows weakness, possibly indicative of a preppy style. And because I don’t necessarily identify with any of those things, I usually avoid bright, bold pinks. This realization discouraged me and also deeply convicted me. How many assumptions have I made about someone or something else based on similar labels?

I can love working with pink and not be too girly, or too weak or too preppy or too…fill in the blank. I can also love working with pink and be all of those things and it’s still okay. Those categories should never alter the worthiness of one’s acceptance.

I am more than the labels that others have put on me or that I have put on myself.
I am more. You are more. Pink is more.
